Calvinia is a regional town in the Northern Cape Province in the Hantam Local Municipality. The Calvinia district forms part of the Groot Karoo region of South Africa, while it lies just south of the Hantam mountains and on the banks of the Oorlogskloof River (meaning War Ravine).

This is the opportunity to live on a small holding in town, with a certain amount of farm animals that can be kept on the property (no piggery is allowed) or subdivision can be done. Water and electricity are provided but a septic tank must be installed.

The earliest known people living in the area were Khoisan people, while the first Europeans in the area were farmers who took their livestock to the Calvinia District in the 1750's.

The town is been called after a French religious reformer Jean Calvin, on the 30 October 1851 and it became a municipality in1904. The name Hantam is derived from the Khoisan word! Han=ami, which refers to a plant with edible roots (in Afrikaans "uintjies") that means where the red bulbs grow.

The town is 470 kilometer north of Cape Town and 140 kilometer away from Vredendal, the main capital. It lies at an attitude of 970 meters and during the winter season, snow falls reguraly on the surrounding mountain while it enjoys an average eighty percent clear starlight during the year.

An asteroid, been named as (1245 Calvinia) is named after the town of Calvinia as well.
